In Hawthorne's "Young Goodman Brown" a man leaves his wife to go run and errand that is evil. He comes upon who I think is the devil. He then follows an old lady, Goody Cloyse, to a witch's meeting and finds out that people he thought he knew were not who they claimed to be. I think the whole thing, if it was a dream, was to punish him for him wanting to run an evil errand. I think the devil just wanted to show him what he could do to him if he wanted to walk that pathway in his life. I think after the "dream" or whatever it was, he had a great wake-up call, to not walk down that pathway in life.
