Sherman and his 105,000 Union soldiers marched through Georgia and into the Carolinas throughout the month of March. Sherman hoped his "march to the sea" would lower the Confederates morale and help win the war.

for a final campaign. Lincoln wanted an end to the war and no more bloodshed. Sherman and his men then marched north towards Richmond, Virginia, but before their arrival the war was over.
Sherman's march proved that the South was very near defeat and couldn't defend itself from an avoiding army. Fifteen towns were burned whole or part as a result of Sherman's march. Today the term "war is hell" can be credited to Sherman.
