hope for Winston is what we hold onto, but as the structure of the novel indicates, we see him evolve in his personal search for hope and freedom to an ultimately devastating end. Orwell, not only by the striking atmosphere created in the novel, but his direct language, is evidence of the abrupt and destructive nature of the regime found in Oceania.
