Diabetes is a developmental disease, characterized by high blood glucose levels, caused
by an improper functioning of the pancreas. The pancreas produces insulin which allows
our body's cells to absorb glucose ( a form of sugar) to be used when energy is needed. If
the pancreas becomes unable to produce insulin, or does not produce it effectively, it leads
to high levels of glucose in the blood, which causes health problems.

hoped that in the long term through the campaign, the incidence of diabetes in the
Australian public would decrease significantly. It was estimated in 1995, that the direct
cost to the health care system, as a result of diabetes, was over $561 million dollars. If run
successfully, the campaign would be a major investment on the health of every Autralian,
with minimum expense, not only in the present but more importantly in the future.
