Quiet on the Western Front' emphasizes the futility of war very effectively, through the use of descriptive styles as well as clever techniques and related themes. The strongest theme that conveys these tragic images and ideas and stands out throughout the novel is the theme of youth, in which the young characters of the same generation change from innocent children to over- experienced, old men, who find no other purpose to life but to survive.
