Social networking has changed pretty much everything! There is no doubt that the Internet has been before and after including in the field of education, where libraries are being replaced or supplemented by the Wikipedia (or “corner of the vague” and where distance learning seems to have a bright future. So, what role mobile devices can play in education?
Specifically, what pedagogical possibilities offered by the iPad? On one hand, students have access to conferences and courses of iTunes University, video and audio files of many U.S. universities. On the other hand, the app store has a category devoted specifically to education, we can see applications on periodic tables, calculator and more. The Elements, such as a special periodic table has been one of the star applications of the tablet.
Applications & More
Beyond applications, the educational institutions themselves are exploring the possibilities. According to sources, there are three areas where an iPad can be useful.
- As an alternative to textbooks and readers of electronic ink. The advantage that the texts are updated automatically, and even develop a collaborative way is huge compared to standard textbooks (and I imagine the reluctance of publishers to opt for a school “free” is going to be important. This applies all the discussions on the future of books and electronic books. Including the fine line that separates interactive applications.
- As an alternative to desktops and netbooks, at least in special circumstances: a few pots are especially suitable for small children, without sufficient expertise to handle a mouse, and seniors (as already mentioned here). In the case of the iPhone, it’s a shame that Apple has banned the Scratch environment, ideal for students to learn programming and faculty making interactive educational materials.
- As a device to access the virtual campus. Experts have created an application to access the iOS virtual campus. The truth is that many forums have similar applications, digital libraries, etc. Being web environments with browsers they can be accessed without problems. The added value of a native application, as a mere adaptation is limited. In this regard, perhaps the greatest potential of the iPad is in distance education and its integration with iTunes: students could access materials and easily pay. It is also likely that appear on special customers to access video conferencing environments. Yet, when comparing the iPad with an iPhone, it’s a shame that the first version of iPhone comes without the front camera.
In addition, the teaching of this pilot will focus on specific uses and applications for iPad, such as videos for teaching and collaborative tools adapted to mobile environments, such as Twitter. This is simply fantastic! Since last year, some universities and business schools have begun to implement various projects based on mobile devices. The benefits of an iPad are hard to deny.
Do you think an iPad is a grandiose development? Are you looking to purchase an iPad? Do you think this device can help at all? Are you a tech oriented student?
